Online therapy best practices
I recently chaired a workgroup for AAMFT developing Best Practices in the Online Practice of Couple and Family Therapy. The document was published in 2017 and is available here.
Changing "interns" to "associates"
I am proud to have spearheaded the change in title from "intern" to "associate" for prelicensed counselors and MFTs in California. The title change has been signed into law and takes effect January 1, 2018. The BBS is currently developing regulations to sunset the term "intern" at the end of 2018. For more on this effort, see my post on PsychotherapyNotes.com.
Protecting trainees from exploitation
I'll be presenting to the BBS in May 2017 on the topic of practicum sites charging master's level therapist trainees hundreds of dollars in fees to work at the site. This practice seems to be common in Los Angeles and rare elsewhere. Sites argue that the fees are necessary, and are used to provide high-quality training from paid supervisors and invited workshops. Students express concern that the fees represent a significant and potentially unavoidable added cost for their education. My presentation will examine the prevalence and impact of these fees, and whether policy changes are needed to protect trainees from the added financial burden.
